A History of Horror with Mark Gatiss

BBC4 yet again came up trums with the mini series "A History of Horror" presented by Mark Gatiss (League of Gentlemen fame)

Over three parts he traced horror from its roots to modern day, from Lugosi to Lee, Hammer to Halloween, he pretty much got the nail on the head telling stories about the smallest details of films I have watched only in passing. I myself am a huge horror fan but I grew up with 80's horror, slashers, zombies, stalkers and poltergeists. I never really paid much attention to the "classic" films. I own Hammer boxsets but have only watched select films and I thank Mark for giving me an insight into the origins of the genre I previously ignored.

This series deserved to be longer, much longer. For years horror has been crying out for an overview, an anothology if you will of the origins to the modern day, one problem I had with the series was Marks reluctance to embrace modern horror and what it stands for, of course you can churn out a film in no time but I don't think he saw the bigger picture, artists who care and make films with the genre principles in mind.

I hope he continues to pursue his love and continue to make informative television. I would love him to focus on Italian cinema of the 60's and 70's, Witchcraft and the occult in cinema and of course the slasher.

In 2001 I bought my girlfriend at the time tickets to see a then up and coming Queens of The Stone Age. Around this time my interest in stoner rock and snippets of doom was taking off. Bands I had on mix cd's were Fu Manchu, Place of Skulls, Sleep, Toadliquor etc etc and Goatsnake. My girlfriend took the tickets and her friend, much to my dismay but they were a gift.

We meet up post gig with her raving about QOTSA. She also mentioned some "shitty band" called Goatsomething. Of course this had no affect on me due to being a newcomer to the genre. Years later I have been kicking myself that I didn't demand her to take me, I would have seen one of my all time favorite bands in the flesh.

So when Toby told me about Roadburn and GOATSNAKE my pants were well and truly shat.

The night came, the night went and I have never pumped my fist, banged my head and sang every, single lyric to a band before.

Best night ever.

When people talk about progressive rock these days they only talk about the big hitters, Genesis, Yes, Pink Floyd, ELP etc etc.

Once a week I am going to post criminally underrated albums that should be heard, I suppose not underrated by die hard progressive rock fans but just your average Joe who likes prog.

VAN DER GRAAF GENERATOR is perhaps the most underrated and unrecognized band of all the 70s prog groups. They lied on the fringe of fame, and are perhaps the best band never to break the American market. Their brand of dark symphonic rock and existentialist and whimsical sections are simply wonderful, they were successful in Italy as many English progressive rock bands were, but due to inner band problems and record label funding failed to make it into the big time.

Give this a go, you won't regret it.

I remember when the name was first introduced to me, I greeted it with a "what the fuck" expression, I thought I was going to be subjected to a German Death Metal band with a penchant for all things nasty. BUT FUCK NO, what I listened to was the most mind blowingly, unsettling, horrified jazz. It was the perfect music for the post 2am session.

I instantly fell in love, the Badalamenti and Lynch esque progression was just what I had been after for beards. They are the perfect candidates for anything Twin Peaks based in the future (if and when, probably not which is a good thing)

I am off round the woods with my Dictaphone, Diane...............

Owen Hargreaves has returned to training following a long layout after operations to both his knees.

He is set to return to first team action in November and is already counting down the days.

"I can’t wait to get back involved in it all," said Hargreaves. "I can’t wait to play again for United, to be able to pull on the shirt and have an effect on games. Running out at Old Trafford will be a big thing for me. It’ll be amazing."

Hargreaves returned to Manchester late last month, along with the physio he worked with throughout his rehabilitation in America.

"The reception I’ve had has been great," he added. “That was one of the things that I really missed, being with the guys in the dressing room. There's such a great energy around this club. It’s fantastic being back in with all the different characters and personalities."

The term genius gets thrown around more than it should these days. Artists with no real talent, soul or heart. Not many artists create the music and the feel. I came across Scott Walker after seeing glimpses of the "30 Century Man" documentary, the following day I went about getting his discography.

I have never ever looked back, I have found my musical calling, my musical genius. From the orchestral choruses to the foreboding drones.

Over the past few years all the best horror films have been getting glitzy hollywood remakes, if its not Michael Bay lacing everying with explosions, its some other douche wanting to put "his touch" on it. So much to my disgust probably the best horror film ever made is being remade, with Natalie Portman in the lead. Suspiria has everything, the atmospherics, music, gore.

The seventies was the best decade for horror hands down, directors such as Argento, Fulci, Bava were churning out legendary films that are still known as classics today. I am hoping one of my favorite films ever doesn't get totally ruined, it doesn't need to be a carbon copy with a new actress, try something new with the story.
